AAAI Chapter Program
Purpose
AAAI local chapters should be organized for educational and scientific purposes to promote the following:
- An increased knowledge of, and greater interest in, artificial intelligence by professionals in the field,
- Increased communication among persons having an interest in AI,
- Greater awareness of artificial intelligence and its potential in the chapter's community at large.
Affiliation
Local chapters are affiliated with the American Association of Artificial Intelligence. AAAI will provide local chapters with the following:
- Contact information for nearby AAAI members (e-mail and postal addresses)
- Announcements of chapter events in AI Magazine and on the AAAI web site
- AAAI membership packets
- Limited organizational help, such as a list of available speakers
- Local chapters can apply for a small grant to initiate chapter activities, such as travel support for an invited speaker
- Limited administrative support, such as maintenance of chapter mailing list, or coordination of annual event, for a small annual fee
Local chapters will provide AAAI with the following:
- Contact information for all chapter officers
- Yearly reports detailing finances and membership statistics
- Periodic reports on activities for AAAI to publicize or report in the AI Magazine
Chapter Activities
Chapters should sponsor events that advance their purpose (see "Purpose"). Examples include the following:
- Monthly speakers (local researchers, AAAI-sponsored speakers)
- Annual dinner meetings
- Technical workshops/symposia
- Database of resumes and/or local AI experts
- Email distribution list
- Professional development seminars
- Scholarships and travel support to conferences (e.g. for students)
- Presentations on AI for K-12 students
- Community service projects
Chapter Organization
New chapters will be formed in response to a petition from chapter organizers.
- To help indicate broad base of support, at least two organizers are needed, preferably from different institutions.
- Petitions for new chapters will be subject to the approval of the AAAI Executive Council
- Chapter officers must be members in good standing of AAAI
- Chapters may support their activities through annual membership fees, corporate sponsorship, fund raising, or per-activity fees
- Chapters will be subject to losing their affiliation with AAAI if they do not provide yearly reports (see "Affiliation" section) for two, or more, consecutive years. In addition, a chapter must maintain a level of activity towards AAAI goals of education and awareness of the field, as stated in the by-laws of AAAI, and must not act in a way that reflects negatively on AAAI or the field of artificial intelligence.
